Varun jets into Madrid and then drives the two hours to Valladolid and one of the finest hotels in Europe – Abadia Retuerta LeDomaine.
This converted monastery has few rooms and suites but a huge reputation for excellent cuisine, service and wines – from its own vineyards.
Varun arrives and meets the Managing Director of the property, Andres Araya, before reviewing his extremely comfortable and palatial suite.
His first excursion is to the winery and the amazing vineyard. In 2005, one of their reds won “Best Wine in the World”. It’s a fabulous experience – from looking at the grapes to seeing the process they take to produce a world-class wine. Varun is lead through the whole process by Enrique Quintana, Managing Director of the Abadia Retuerta winery.
Back in the “Monastery”, Varun heads to the kitchen for their first major cooking masterclass with the property’s gastronomy manager, the two-Michelin chef of Mugaritz, Andoni Luis Aduriz.
Varun then heads into the heart of the town of Valladolid – which was the capital of Spain in the 17th century. Here he sees and tastes the new face of tapas at Los Zagales owned by brothers Javier and Antonio Gonzalez Garcia … and then samples Spanish-Japanese cuisine at Wabi-Sabi with Mariola Lopez.
This episode really is all about the best in Spanish food and drink!
Back at Abadia, Varun takes a leisurely ride through the vineyards on horseback before arriving at a falconry display. Of course he joins in (scary!).
Finally, it’s back into the kitchen for one last cooking lesson with Quique Dacosta, the three-Michelin star chef and friend of Andoni who just happened to be visiting LeDomaine. He is regarded as one of the finest chefs in the world.
The episode ends in a grape-squishing exercise in the winery!
